A little boy finds his happy sleep place again after scary tornadoes
A family contacted me a couple months ago with a sweet little two year old boy who was a pretty good sleeper until there were some terrifying tornadoes this Spring that came dangerously close to his family’s house. After those very scary events, he struggled to go to bed at night and would often want to crawl into bed with Mommy and Daddy in the middle of the night. He was also resisting taking his naps which he used to so easily do. His parents thought this was a phase and given some time, he would go back to sleeping in his own bed happily as he was before. After a few months passed by and his sleep habits were only getting worse, they decided it was time to get some help.
They really wanted to make sure that the approach to help their son’s sleep was gentle but also effective. I developed a plan for them that focused on bedtime being an enjoyable time again however having some good structure and clear expectations around it. We also addressed how to help him stay in his bed all night long and take good naps again. Within a week, his parents reported that he was happy to go to bed and very proud of himself when he stayed in his own bed all night long.
I received an update from this family that on a recent vacation, he was asking his Mom if he could go and take his nap, requesting the nap routine first before he went to sleep. Needless to say, Mommy and Daddy were so thrilled to see their little guy eager to go to sleep on his own again and now everyone in this family is back to getting some sleep again!
